Agartala, March 18, 2026: The Agartala Zonal Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) marked its 41st Raising Day with a comprehensive one-day awareness programme on drug abuse and prevention, held in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Tripura Police, and Ramthakur College on Tuesday.
The NCB, functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, serves as the nodal agency for drug law enforcement in the country since its establishment on March 17, 1986. The Agartala Zonal Unit oversees operations across Tripura and Mizoram, playing a crucial role in curbing narcotics trafficking through coordinated efforts with central and state agencies.
Highlighting the dual strategy of drug control—supply reduction and demand reduction—the programme focused on raising awareness among youth about the dangers of substance abuse. While enforcement agencies like NCB and state police concentrate on curbing supply, initiatives such as this aim to reduce demand through education and outreach.
Sanjoy Roy, DIG, ANTF, Tripura Police, attended the event as the Chief Guest, while renowned gymnast and Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Padma Shri awardee Dipa Karmakar graced the occasion as the Special Guest. Other dignitaries included guest speaker Dr. Dipayan Sarkar and SP ANTF Shri Shyamananda Sharma. The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Haradhan Saha, Principal of Ramthakur College.
The event featured a series of cultural and educational activities, including a welcome felicitation, ceremonial lighting of the lamp, an inaugural song, and a dance-drama performed by students depicting the harmful effects of drug abuse. Speakers addressed various aspects of narcotics use, including its physical and psychological consequences, while urging students to stay vigilant and avoid falling into addiction.
Participants were also sensitized about the MANAS Helpline (1933), a key support system for individuals facing mental health and substance abuse issues. Emphasis was laid on the role of youth in building a drug-free society and contributing to a healthier future.
More than 300 students attended the programme, reflecting strong engagement and awareness among the younger generation. The event concluded with Assistant Director of NCB Agartala, Shri Ravindra Baghel, administering a pledge against drug abuse, followed by a vote of thanks.
Reaffirming its commitment, the NCB Agartala Zonal Unit reiterated the need for collective action to combat the menace of narcotics and dismantle drug networks, ensuring public safety and regional stability.
