Kohima, Oct 18: In a significant political development, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has resolved to merge with the Naga People’s Front (NPF), aiming to strengthen regional unity and address the long-standing Indo-Naga political issue. The decision was taken during the NDPP’s general convention, where the party welcomed the NPF’s unconditional offer to amalgamate under the NPF banner. The merger is expected to boost the party’s strength to 34 MLAs, solidifying its absolute majority in the 60-member assembly. The move is seen as a significant step towards consolidating regional unity and promoting the voice of the Naga people. The NDPP lauded the leadership of President Chingwang Konyak and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, crediting their dynamism and political presence for guiding the party.

The merger will combine the NDPP’s 32 MLAs with the NPF’s 2 legislators, creating a unified regional party focused on resolving the Indo-Naga issue and promoting a vibrant and developed society. The development comes after the NDPP’s recent expansion, with seven NCP MLAs joining the party in June, increasing its numbers from 25 to 32. The state assembly currently comprises 32 NDPP, 12 BJP, 5 NPP, and other members.
