Aizawl, May 28: The North Eastern Council (NEC) has reinforced its developmental presence in Mizoram with investments amounting to ₹339.06 crore during the 15th Finance Commission period from 2022 to 2026. The funding was directed towards healthcare, education, connectivity, tourism, agriculture, and livelihood sectors, reflecting a broad push for inclusive growth.

Under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC), ₹123.83 crore was allocated to projects ranging from medical and veterinary facilities to educational institutions, cultural centres, sports infrastructure, and community development works. Agriculture and allied activities received special attention, with initiatives promoting wet rice cultivation, potato seed production, piggery, poultry, fisheries, arecanut cultivation, passion fruit processing, and livestock development.

The Council also invested in preserving Mizoram’s cultural and natural heritage through cultural centres, tourism circuits, ecological parks, and eco-tourism projects. Connectivity was strengthened under the NESIDS-Roads programme, which saw six projects worth ₹277.99 crore sanctioned, including the upgradation of the Saiha-Lungbun-Tlangnuam-Haka Road to enhance links with Myanmar under India’s Act East Policy. Two projects worth ₹25.19 crore have already been completed.

Youth and scientific outreach were expanded through initiatives such as the Ashtalakshmi Youth Exchange Programme, which brought 581 students from across India to premier institutions in the Northeast, including 44 students hosted by Mizoram University in January 2026. NE-SPARKS further engaged 99 students from Mizoram in visits to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), promoting scientific awareness and innovation.

In April 2026, NEC released funds for ongoing projects in Mizoram, including livestock rearing support in the Sinlung Hills Council area, a State Veterinary Information and Resource Centre, a market building at West Phaileng in Mamit district, and tourism development at Vangchhia in Champhai district under the initiative “Our Heritage, Our Treasure.” Additionally, ₹20.09 crore was disbursed under NESIDS-Roads for projects such as the Pukzing–Silsury Road and Tualpui–Champhai Road.
