Agartala, December 10, 2025: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), representing eight major students’ bodies across the region, has announced that December 11 will once again be observed as Black Day in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 2019.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, NESO reminded the people of the Northeast that on December 11, 2019, the Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha despite strong opposition from indigenous communities across the region. NESO described the Act as a “draconian law” and termed its passage as a “political injustice” inflicted upon the indigenous people of the Northeast.

NESO has declared that December 11 will “always be remembered as a Black Day” for the region. To mark the observance in 2025, the organisation has called for the display of black flags and black banners in all major locations of the seven Northeastern states.

According to NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu, the symbolic protest is meant to send a clear message to the Government of India that the indigenous people of the Northeast remain firmly opposed to the CAA.

The organisation urged the public to join the observation and continue the struggle for the “just cause” of protecting the rights and identity of the region’s indigenous communities.
