A new species of cave-dwelling loach, Schistura densiclava, has been discovered in Meghalaya by researchers from Gauhati University and Lady Keane College, marking the sixth such discovery from the state known for its rich subterranean biodiversity.
The discovery was led by Dr Kangkan Sarma and his team from Gauhati University. Announcing the find on X, the university noted that this is the ninth new fish species identified by the team.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma commended the researchers and said the discovery highlights the state’s unique and diverse ecosystem.
