Agartala, April 04, 2026: In a tragic incident, a student of National Institute of Technology Agartala drowned while bathing at the popular tourist spot Narikel Kunj in Dumbur. The victim has been identified as Abhinav Singh (20), son of Neetu Singh, a resident of Udyog Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
It is reported that, Abhinav, along with three friends (two girls and one boy), had visited Narikel Kunj on Friday afternoon. The group stayed overnight at a private tourist lodge. On Saturday at around 12:30 pm, they went to bathe near the helipad area of the tourist spot.
While Abhinav had some knowledge of swimming, his friends reportedly did not know how to swim. During the outing, Abhinav ventured into deeper waters, where he began to struggle and eventually drowned. Despite raising an alarm, his friends were unable to rescue him.
Upon receiving information, the Gandachhara Fire Brigade and sub-divisional disaster response volunteers rushed to the spot and initiated a search operation. Local fishermen and tourist boat operators also joined the rescue efforts.
The sub-divisional administration alerted the Dhalai district authorities, following which an HDRF team from Kachuchhara was deployed. The National Disaster Response Force team from Agartala has also been informed.
As of the latest update, the student remains untraced, and search operations are ongoing. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the NIT Agartala campus, with classmates and faculty expressing deep concern.
