Renowned Manipuri writer Haobam Satyabati Devi has stated that there are no restrictions on freedom of expression in most parts of Manipur, except in areas affected by the ongoing Meitei-Kuki conflict.

In an interview with PTI Bhasha, Haobam, who was recently honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award, discussed the ongoing challenges in the state due to the ethnic violence, which has claimed over 250 lives since May 2023. She pointed out that internet bans and movement restrictions in conflict zones have disrupted daily life. However, she emphasized that freedom of expression remains largely unaffected outside these areas.

Haobam expressed hope for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the state, acknowledging the efforts of both the central and state governments. While she recognized the limitations on the movement of intellectuals due to the unrest, she maintained that there are no formal restrictions on expression in the majority of the state.

Haobam, a prolific writer known for works like “Sakhangdabi” and “Pokanapham,” also discussed the lack of Hindi literature translation into Manipuri, urging for more cross-cultural literary exchanges. In 2021, she was awarded the Rajkumar Sheetaljit Singh Lifetime Achievement Award.

Haobam is among the recipients of the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2024, with the award ceremony scheduled for March 8, 2024.
