Agartala, August 11, 2025: Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman has assured that every student who passed the state’s Class 12 board examination this year will be accommodated in government degree colleges. The statement comes against the backdrop of protests at Ramthakur Degree College, Agartala, over alleged irregularities in admissions that led to the suspension of a professor.
Barman said more than 24,000 students cleared the higher secondary examination in 2025, while the state has around 33,000 seats available in government degree colleges. “All eligible students will get admission, though the college or subject of their preference may not always be possible,” he said. The minister has directed college principals in Agartala to increase intake capacity to meet the demand.
The unrest at Ramthakur College began after allegations surfaced that a professor admitted over 100 students illegally by forging the principal’s signature. In response, the professor was suspended pending investigation.
Speaking to reporters, college principal Papri Das Sengupta said the institution had already exceeded its admission capacity. “Admissions have been done strictly on merit through the online portal,” she maintained.
While Barman distanced the Higher Education Department from the incident, he emphasised that authorities are committed to ensuring transparency and fairness in the admission process. Officials are now working to distribute students across colleges and subjects to ensure that no eligible applicant is left without a seat.
