The Peace Maker Artistes Association, one of Manipur’s leading Shumang Leela groups, celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day with much fanfare and reverence at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Imphal. The event was marked by the presence of distinguished personalities from the world of Manipuri theatre, literature, and culture, along with a heartfelt tribute to veteran Shumang Leela artistes.
G. Dharmadas Sharma, Deputy Director of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, Sharma underscored the enduring relevance of Shumang Leela in promoting cultural values, unity, and moral education in society.
The celebration was presided over by Sorokhaibam Ibohanbi Singh, a senior artiste and President of the Peace Maker Artistes Association.
Prominent figures who attended as Guests of Honour included Laishram Tomba, President of the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council; Shougrakpam Hemanta, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee and Lifetime Secretary of the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council; Dr. Makhonmani Mongsaba, Sahitya Akademi Awardee and retired Assistant Professor of Manipur University of Culture; and Manaobi MM, renowned playwright.
Dr. Makhonmani, in his speech, reflected on the powerful role Shumang Leela plays in spreading knowledge and social awareness through its accessible, community-based performances.
A highlight of the event was the felicitation of revered senior artistes who have contributed immensely to the Shumang Leela tradition. Among those honoured were Nobin (Amina sabi of Abir Khan Leela) of Kyamgei; Inakhunba (Devdas saba) of Heingang; Khurai Tiken; AK Bangol of Koirengei; L. Radhamohan Sharma of Thangapat; Ibotombi of Konjeng Leikai; Muktabali of Khurai; Punimashi of Pishum; Mangichand of Luwangshangbam; Gauradash of Angtha.
Also gracing the occasion were noted senior artistes associated with the Peace Maker Artistes Association, including Iboyaima Khuman and Robindro Langthabal.
The Foundation Day celebration not only showcased the deep-rooted cultural heritage of Manipur through Shumang Leela but also served as a tribute to those who have preserved and promoted this vital art form across generations.
