Agartala, May 25, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned financial assistance of ₹3 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the kidney transplant treatment of Padma Shri awardee Shri Chittaranjan Debbarma, popularly known as Chitta Maharaj of Shanti Kali Ashram.
According to an official communication issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on May 19, the assistance was approved in principle to partially defray the expenses related to the renal transplant procedure at the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), Kolkata.
Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister, Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb said, “I extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji, for sanctioning medical assistance of ₹3 lakhs through the PM National Relief Fund for the kidney transplant of the revered Chitta Maharaj (Shri Chittaranjan Debbarma) of the Shanti Kali Ashram, who is a recipient of the Padma Shri award.”
Deb said that he had immediately forwarded the application to the PM National Relief Fund after learning about the need for advanced medical treatment for the spiritual leader.
“As soon as the matter regarding his advanced medical treatment for the kidney transplant was brought to my attention, I immediately forwarded the application to the PM National Relief Fund. The sanction was received within a very short span of time,” he said.
The MP further stated that the Prime Minister has consistently extended support in cases related to critical medical treatment.
“Prior to this as well, regarding matters of advanced medical treatment, the Prime Minister has graciously sanctioned almost every request that has been submitted to him,” Deb added.
The PMO letter stated that the sanctioned amount would be released after submission of the actual expenditure details by the hospital, subject to prescribed terms and conditions.
