Agartala, March 30, 2026: A small village in Tripura’s North district has emerged as a model of community-led transformation, drawing praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its success in water conservation and sustainable living.

Nestled in the Jampui Hills, Vangmun village, once grappling with acute water scarcity, has transformed itself through collective efforts and now stands as a symbol of resilience. Highlighting the initiative during his recent address in Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of water conservation, especially with the onset of summer across several parts of the country.

Over the past decade, he noted, campaigns such as the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan have led to the creation of nearly 50 lakh artificial water harvesting structures nationwide, significantly boosting awareness on water preservation. He also pointed out that under the Amrit Sarovar Abhiyan, around 70,000 water bodies have been developed, with cleaning and maintenance already underway ahead of the monsoon.

Citing Vangmun as a notable example, Modi said the village, located at an altitude of around 3,000 feet, had long suffered from severe water shortages, forcing residents to travel long distances to fetch water during summers. However, through collective resolve and community participation, nearly every household now has rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, making the village largely self-sufficient in water.

In the same programme, the Prime Minister also highlighted the impact of renewable energy initiatives in Tripura. Referring to Karnaram Para in Khowai district, he said solar microgrids have brought significant changes in remote tribal areas.

“The benefits of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are reaching the Northeast. In Tripura, several villages of the Reang community that once faced electricity issues are now illuminated through solar mini-grids. Children are able to study after dusk, people can charge mobile phones, and overall social life has improved,” he said.
