Agartala, June 21, 2025: The 11th International Yoga Day was observed with great enthusiasm and cultural pride at the ancient Shaivite pilgrimage site of Unakoti in Tripura’s Unakoti district joining the global celebration of yoga’s transformative power.
The day’s event held amidst the spiritually rich and historically significant rock carvings of Unakoti was organized by the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, Department of Archaeology, Tripura AYUSH Mission and the Unakoti District Administration on Saturday morning. It witnessed participation from two key state ministers, senior bureaucrats and local residents.
Addressing the gathering, State Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said, “Today we are very happy that we have all gathered at Shaivatirtha Unakoti on the occasion of World Yoga Day. I extend my greetings to all the people of the state. Yoga practice is very necessary to keep the body healthy, and it is a part of our ancient tradition. The Prime Minister has taken this heritage to the global stage.”
He added, “Yoga is essential not just for physical fitness but also for sharpening memory and improving mental health. In today’s time, when stress and underperformance are common, yoga can restore balance and efficiency.”
Prisons Minister Santana Chakma, also present at the event, emphasized yoga’s role in youth empowerment. “Yoga unites our body, mind, and soul. It is important to increase health awareness among the youth. Today’s program encourages them to adopt a healthy lifestyle instead of falling prey to addiction or distractions. These initiatives contribute to building a healthy and aware generation,” she stated.
Among the dignitaries attending were Unakoti District Magistrate Tamal Majumdar, SP Sudhambika R, Tourism Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma and Higher Education Director Animesh Debbarma.
The yoga demonstration, held against the backdrop of Unakoti’s ancient rock-cut sculptures, offered a unique blend of spiritual heritage and modern wellness. The celebration not only honored yoga’s global appeal but also reaffirmed Unakoti’s cultural and archaeological significance, giving the younger generation a renewed appreciation of their roots.
