Agartala, January 09, 2025: Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital’s doctors have successfully performed a rare and high-risk surgery on a 10-day-old premature infant suffering from neonatal gangrene, a life-threatening condition rarely seen in newborns.

The baby girl, born on December 25, 2025, to Jebin Begam and Jainul Haque of Kailashahar’s Irani police station area in Unakoti district, was delivered prematurely after her mother’s amniotic sac ruptured en route to the hospital. Weighing just around one kilogram at birth, the newborn soon developed severe respiratory distress and was initially admitted to a private hospital.

Following a series of referrals—from a private facility to Silchar Medical College and then Gauhati Medical College—the family eventually returned home due to the infant’s low birth weight. A local paediatrician later advised them to consult senior surgeon Dr Aniruddha Basak at TMC.

The baby was admitted to TMC on December 31, just six days after birth. Dr Basak diagnosed her with neonatal gangrene in her right leg, a condition that posed an immediate threat to her life. “If immediate surgery was not performed, the infection could have spread throughout the body, severely affecting her chances of survival,” Dr Basak stated.

After thorough diagnostic evaluations, the surgical team proceeded with a Lisfranc amputation on January 6, removing the affected portion of the leg. Given the infant’s age and fragile condition, doctors described the procedure as extremely delicate and complex.

Hospital authorities confirmed the surgery was successful. The baby remains under close medical supervision at TMC, with doctors optimistic about her recovery.
