President’s Rule in Manipur to extend for another six months, effective from August 13, 2025, following a resolution passed in the Lok Sabha. The extension was moved by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and approved by the House as per Article 356 of the Constitution.
The official notice read, “That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the February 13, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025.”
President’s Rule was initially imposed on February 13, 2025, after former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stepped down under increasing pressure from BJP legislators of the Meitei community who had turned against his leadership.
The decision to extend central rule comes even as MLAs from the Meitei and Naga communities within the ruling NDA alliance are pressing for the restoration of an elected government in the state.
Under Article 356(3) of the Constitution, President’s Rule is administered through the Governor’s office and can be extended in six-month intervals with parliamentary approval, up to a maximum of three years.
