Agartala, February 27, 2026: Emphasising that democracy cannot thrive without accountability, Rajya Sabha Vice-Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh on Friday said that public representatives must discharge their responsibilities through regional coordination, capacity building and well-planned legislative strategies.
Addressing a seminar and workshop on the Responsibility and Accountability of Public Representatives towards All Sections of the People, Singh said the programme was of great significance for both democracy and development. “The more awareness public representatives have about government projects, the better they can present their work in the court of the people,” he remarked.
The Vice Chairman noted that eight states of the North-Eastern region fall under Zone Three of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. He stressed that elected representatives must take development initiatives to the grassroots level so that the benefits of governance reach every section of society. “Overall welfare of the people should remain the guiding principle of all public representatives,” he said.
Highlighting the region’s progress, Singh said that an epochal change has been witnessed in the development of the North-East since 2014. He added that economic prosperity would be possible only through collective efforts, especially in view of the prevailing geopolitical situation.
Referring to Tripura’s role, the Vice Chairman said that the journey towards a developed India passes through the state, underlining its strategic and developmental importance. He concluded by wishing success to the conference, expressing hope that the deliberations would further strengthen democratic values and accountability among public representatives.
