The Rajya Sabha has allocated two hours to discuss a resolution seeking an extension of President’s rule in Manipur for another six months starting August 13. The decision was announced by Deputy Chairman Harivansh following a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee.
The discussion is expected to take place later this week.
The Rajya Sabha Secretariat earlier confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has submitted a resolution for approval. The notice states: “That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated the 13th February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025.”
President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 this year after the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Meanwhile, efforts to form a new government in the strife-torn state continue, with BJP-backed Meitei and Naga MLAs engaged in a sustained campaign to restore an elected government.
