Agartala, March 18, 2026: On the fourth day of the ongoing session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, ruling BJP MLA Rampada Jamatia was elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the House.
Announcing the development, Speaker-in-charge Ramprasad Paul said the election process began with the receipt of three proposals supporting Jamatia’s candidature. The proposals were moved by Chief Minister Manik Saha and supported by MLA Swapna Das Paul; by Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma and backed by Tipra Motha MLA Chitta Ranjan Debbarma; and by Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, supported by Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy.
“After thorough examination of all proposals, the motion was placed before the House. With no opposition or competing nominations, MLA Rampada Jamatia was declared elected as the Speaker unanimously,” Paul stated.
Jamatia had filed his nomination papers for the Speaker’s post a day earlier before Assembly Secretary A.K. Nath.
Following his election, he was congratulated by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, and Congress MLA Birajit Sinha, among others.
Congratulating the newly elected Speaker, Chief Minister Manik Saha said, “As the Leader of the House, I would like to say that we have received a person like you, who is a two-time MLA and has been engaged in politics and social work, and has also served as a minister. I congratulate you on behalf of the people of Tripura and the Treasury Bench. I believe you will maintain neutrality and script a new history. I wish your journey to be successful and auspicious.”
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also extended his wishes, saying, “I would like to congratulate you on this important post. I have known him since his early days working in a jute mill in Tripura. The role of this chair is very important. Though the Opposition bench is small, we hope we will get the opportunity to speak. We expect you to uphold the dignity of the House.”
