Renowned Manipuri actress Kshetrimayum Rashi, popularly known by her stage name Rashi Leima, passed away on Friday at the age of 75. Her death marks the end of an era in Manipuri cinema and theatre, where she was a pioneering figure whose contributions laid the foundation for the industry’s growth.
Rashi Leima rose to prominence with her memorable performance in Matamgi Manipur (1972), the first full-length feature film of the state. Her role in the groundbreaking film not only made her a household name but also heralded a new chapter in Manipuri cinema.
Born in March 1950, Rashi Leima was introduced to the world of performance by her mother, Rasamani Devi, a respected figure in the arts. She made her stage debut in 1969 at Aryan Theatre, Imphal, portraying the legendary freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu in the play Jadonang. Her performance received high praise, including from Rani Gaidinliu herself, cementing her reputation as a gifted actress.
Following her cinematic debut, Rashi Leima starred in several landmark Manipuri films, including Lamja Parsuram (1974) and Olangthagee Wangmadasu (1979). Her portrayal of a widow in Olangthagee Wangmadasu was particularly acclaimed for its emotional depth and authenticity.
