Rescue Operations Launched After Heavy Snowfall Stranded Tourists In East Sikkim

Gangtok, April 22: Swift rescue operations were carried out in East Sikkim after sudden heavy snowfall on April 21 left tourists and local residents stranded in prolonged traffic congestion. Multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), Sikkim Police, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, tourism stakeholders, and local volunteers, worked in close coordination to provide immediate assistance.

Teams acted with urgency to safeguard lives, regulate traffic, and manage the situation under challenging weather conditions. Their timely intervention prevented further escalation and ensured the well-being of those affected, including elderly individuals caught in the disruption.

As a result of these concerted efforts, smooth traffic movement was restored along the JNM Axis, a vital route for the region. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department expressed gratitude to the Indian Army, GREF, Sikkim Police, local stakeholders, and volunteers for their dedication and prompt response in effectively managing the crisis.
