The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a complex aorto-biliac bypass surgery for a rare bilateral common iliac artery aneurysm—marking the first such procedure in Manipur.

The surgery was conducted on March 15, 2026, on a 79-year-old male patient who was admitted with a life-threatening condition involving a large bilateral common iliac artery aneurysm with impending rupture.
The case was further complicated by uncontrolled hypertension and a previous stroke that had caused right-side weakness. Following the intricate procedure, the patient has made a full recovery and was discharged last week.
Medical experts noted that bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms affecting both sides are extremely rare and technically demanding, requiring a high degree of surgical precision and coordination. The successful outcome highlights the advanced capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise available at RIMS.
The surgical team was led by Prof. Thokchom Chito, Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department. The cardiac anaesthesia team was headed by Prof. L. Pradipkumar and Dr. Ningri Sengul, while the general surgery team was led by Prof. Laitonjam Chinglensana.
In addition to this landmark achievement, RIMS performed 13 open-heart surgeries during the month, including procedures for Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Tetralogy of Fallot, Double Chambered Right Ventricle, and heart valve replacements. All surgeries were carried out under the overall supervision of Dr. Shyamkumar Thingnam.
The team expressed gratitude to the Director and Medical Superintendent of RIMS for their continued support and guidance.
The Director, in turn, lauded the dedication and leadership of the medical teams, stating that their commitment has been instrumental in advancing healthcare services and enabling such high-risk, life-saving procedures in the state.
