As the Union government continues its engagement with Meitei and Kuki groups from Manipur, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday said it has been playing a role in bringing the two communities together and expressed optimism that a solution to the ethnic conflict in the state “will be found”.
Speaking at a press conference following the conclusion of the Sangh’s three-day Prant Pracharak Baithak, RSS publicity head Sunil Ambekar said the organisation has opened lines of communication with both Meiteis and Kukis.
“When situations worsen in a region, they do not improve overnight. But compared to last year, there is a modicum of peace in Manipur. With the kind of dialogue taking place on both sides, we believe a solution will be found,” Ambekar said.
The national-level meeting, held from Friday to Sunday, was attended by senior RSS leaders, including chief Mohan Bhagwat. Ambekar noted that Sangh workers in Manipur had shared their efforts to build peace during the discussions.
“They explained how they are engaging with both Meitei and Kuki communities to improve the situation. According to their experience, things are gradually moving in a positive direction. It may take some time, but we have received encouraging updates,” he added.
The RSS statement comes amid ongoing talks in Delhi, led by the Centre’s Northeast advisor A.K. Mishra, with both Meitei civil society groups and Kuki militant groups under a Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement.
These talks, which began nearly two years after ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, are seen as a critical step towards restoring free movement and persuading SoO groups to relocate their camps from the edges of the Imphal Valley. Sources said that the imposition of President’s Rule in the state helped reduce violence and created a conducive environment for dialogue.
Ambekar also said the RSS meeting discussed various national issues, including India’s response to terrorism through Operation Sindoor.
