Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has appealed to the public to refrain from spreading misinformation amid rising tensions in Bishnupur district following an unfortunate incident that escalated into violence.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Minister’s Block, New Secretariat, Mantripukhri in Imphal West, the Home Minister stated that the situation turned volatile after a misunderstanding triggered panic and suspicion among locals. The press meet was attended by MLAs Thounaojam Basanta Kumar (Nambol), Tongbram Robindro (Thanga), and Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam).

The Minister informed that the incident began after a joint team of CISF, Assam Rifles, and state forces apprehended a suspected drug peddler, Sabhir Ahmad, from Tulihal Airport at around 10:30 am. During interrogation, the accused reportedly disclosed the presence of additional drugs and weapons at Kwakta in Bishnupur district. Acting on this input, Assam Rifles personnel in plain clothes escorted him to the location.

However, en route, local women conducting vehicle checks stopped the team, leading to a serious miscommunication. Rumours quickly spread that members of a particular community were inside the vehicle, creating confusion and suspicion. The situation soon spiralled out of control, with mobs attacking the team. In the ensuing chaos, several individuals were injured and the vehicle was set ablaze, further intensifying unrest in the area.

Security forces, including Assam Rifles and commandos, later reached the spot and launched rescue operations. Several individuals were safely evacuated with assistance from local volunteers. The state has since deployed additional security personnel, including central forces and the Army, while combing operations are underway to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Describing the incident as serious and concerning, the Home Minister said efforts are ongoing to identify those involved and take swift action. He also informed that authorities, including MLAs from Moirang and Kumbi constituencies, have been briefed, and a meeting with the Chief Minister is being planned to address the situation.

Appealing for calm, Govindas Konthoujam urged citizens not to spread panic or unverified information, stressing that misinformation can aggravate an already sensitive situation.
