Agartala, April 29, 2026: In a significant move to document and promote grassroots heritage, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development (Panchayat), Government of Tripura, unveiled an illustrated publication titled “A Monograph on Heritage Sites and Tourist Spots of Rural Tripura” at Vigyan Bhawan on April 24 last. The release coincided with the observance of National Panchayati Raj Day.
The monograph marks a major step toward systematically documenting the cultural, architectural, and natural wealth of rural Tripura. Compiled at the Panchayat level, the publication presents detailed visuals and information on a wide array of heritage structures and tourist attractions, reflecting the state’s diverse traditions, historical legacy, and scenic beauty.
Developed under the Ministry’s Panchayat Dharohar initiative, the effort aligns with the broader vision of empowering Panchayati Raj Institutions to actively participate in preserving and promoting local heritage. With cultural activities being one of the 29 subjects devolved to Panchayats under the Constitution, the initiative strengthens grassroots engagement while also contributing valuable inputs to the Ministry of Culture’s Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar portal.
In Tripura, the initiative has gained momentum under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman. Their focus on rural eco-tourism has provided strategic direction, positioning local heritage as a key driver for sustainable tourism, livelihood generation, and economic growth.
Officials expressed optimism that the monograph will help bring lesser-known destinations into the spotlight while strengthening eco-tourism management across rural regions. The publication is set to be widely distributed among Panchayats, libraries, and training institutions, serving as a valuable resource for capacity-building and enabling local bodies to leverage heritage assets for inclusive development.
During the event, two additional publications under the Panchayat Dharohar Initiative—“A Monograph on the Rural Heritage of Tirupati” and “Uttarkashi: Soumya Kashi—The Soul of Himalayan Heritage”—were also unveiled.
These initiatives are in line with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and the government’s ‘Jan-Sankalps’, including ‘Desh Darshan’ and ‘Vocal for Local’, with a strong emphasis on public participation, sustainable development, and the promotion of indigenous heritage and local economies.
