Satyapal Malik, former Governor of Meghalaya, passed away at the age of 79 in Delhi on Tuesday. He died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications. According to hospital authorities, he passed away at 1:10 PM. Malik was admitted to the hospital on May 11 and was receiving dialysis.
Born on July 24, 1946, Malik held several key constitutional and political positions during his long public career. He served as the 10th and last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. During his tenure, the Government of India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
After completing his term in Jammu and Kashmir, he was appointed as the Governor of Goa and later served as the Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022.
Malik began his political career in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, serving from 1974 to 1977. He was a Rajya Sabha member representing Uttar Pradesh from 1980 to 1989 and later served as a Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh between 1989 and 1991 as a Janata Dal member.
He also served as the Governor of Bihar from October 2017 to August 2018 and held additional charge as Governor of Odisha from March to May 2018.
