A multidisciplinary scientific team successfully concluded a field expedition in North Sikkim from August 26 to September 1, focusing on glacial lake assessments and sediment studies following recent flood events in the region.

The mission began from Muguthang on Day 6 and reached South Lhonak by Day 8. At South Lhonak, a ceremonial pooja was conducted at Chimigyader and the lake to invoke blessings for the safety and success of the operation. The team carried out bathymetric studies, installed pressure probes, and collected post-flood sediment samples crucial for glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risk assessments.

After completing studies at South Lhonak, members from Himachal Pradesh, the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Central Water Commission (CWC), Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), and Geological Survey of India (GSI) departed.

Remaining scientists moved to Changsang Lake, situated at 18,100 ft, to perform bathymetric mapping and detailed morphometric analysis of the lake’s terminal moraine, an important factor in evaluating the stability and hazard potential of glacial lakes.

On September 1, the team reached Thangu to begin studies at Yuleh Khangse Lake, above Lashar Valley, continuing the broader glaciological and hydrological research mission.

The expedition is part of India’s ongoing efforts to monitor Himalayan glaciers and improve early warning systems for GLOFs and other climate-related hazards in high-altitude areas.
