Amid growing concerns over the declining state of the printing industry in Manipur, the All Manipur Press Association (AMPA) on Sunday organised a one-day seminar-cum-roadshow on the theme “Future of Printing Industry and India’s Act East Policy” at Classic Grande, Imphal.

The event was graced by Anurag Bajpai, IFS, Additional Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industries), Government of Manipur, as Chief Guest. Key speakers included Jaiveer Singh, President of the Indian Printing Packaging & Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA); Akham Joykumar, Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM); and Sunil Khurana, Vice President (East) of the All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP). AMPA President YK Dhiren presided over the function.

During technical sessions and keynote addresses, participants highlighted the mounting challenges facing the local printing industry — from the high cost of machinery and lack of skilled labour to limited infrastructure and the rapid rise of digital alternatives. Speakers noted that these issues have led to declining revenues and increasing unemployment in the sector, especially among small and medium printing units.

Despite the hardships, experts stressed that printing remains vital for sectors such as education, government documentation, packaging, and media. They urged industry stakeholders to adapt to emerging technologies, including eco-friendly solutions, automation, and digital printing.

In his address, Chief Guest Anurag Bajpai encouraged the local industry to explore new growth avenues under India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to enhance trade and cultural ties with Southeast Asia. He underscored the potential for Manipur’s printing sector to tap into cross-border markets with appropriate policy support and technological upgrades.

The event also saw the release of a souvenir, cultural performances, and felicitation of key sponsors and dignitaries. AMPA President YK Dhiren called for consistent government support and the development of sustainable business models to revitalise the printing ecosystem in Manipur.
