Gangtok, May 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Sikkim@50 event virtually today, marking the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood. Due to inclement weather, PM Modi addressed the gathering from Bagdogra instead of attending in person in Gangtok. During his address, PM Modi highlighted Sikkim’s progress, saying the state and the entire Northeast are emerging as a shining chapter in India’s progress.
The Prime Minister emphasized the Centre’s support for Sikkim’s growth, citing significant infrastructure developments. These include the Sevoke-Rongpo railway line, which will connect Sikkim to the country’s rail network, and approximately 400 kilometers of new national highways constructed in the state over the past decade. Additionally, over 100 kilometers of new roads have been built in rural areas, and the Atal Setu has improved connectivity between Sikkim and Darjeeling.
PM Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to balanced development across all states and regions, emphasizing the “Act East” policy with an “Act Fast” approach. He praised Sikkim’s progress, saying it has become a model of nature and progress, and highlighted the state’s focus on organic farming and fish cultivation. The Prime Minister also emphasized Sikkim’s potential as a global tourist destination and its role in India’s emerging sports landscape.
