Sikkim Assembly Delegation Attends All India Speakers’ Conference At New Delhi

Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Mingma Norbu Sherpa, Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, Secretary Lalit Kumar Gurung, and officials of the Assembly participated in the inaugural session of the Conference of All India Speakers and Deputy Speakers at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. The event marked the centenary of Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel becoming the first Indian elected Speaker.

The conference was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The programme included floral tributes at the statue of Vithalbhai Patel, along with the inauguration and viewing of an exhibition. Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, ministers of the Delhi government, members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and Speakers and Deputy Speakers from across the country attended the event.

The second session featured deliberations on two themes: “Role of Nationalist Leaders of the Pre-Independence Central Legislatures in the Freedom Movement and Social Reforms,” addressed by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and “India – Mother of Democracy,” delivered by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.

In the evening, delegates joined a preparatory meeting for the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference scheduled in Bridgetown, Barbados, from October 6 to 12, 2025. The meeting, held at the Lok Sabha Secretariat under the chairmanship of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, concluded with a cultural programme and dinner.
