The Sikkim unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Environment, Bhupendra Yadav, to urgently reassess the clearance granted for the Teesta-III Hydropower Project. In a letter penned by BJP Sikkim President D.R. Thapa, the party raised concerns over the lack of scientific reassessment, outdated public consultation processes, and potential environmental risks tied to the project.
Following the catastrophic Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) of October 2023, the BJP has called for a suspension of approval until all outstanding scientific studies are completed. The party also requested a revised assessment of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) and independent verification of the results. Additionally, it demanded a new Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that takes into account updated climate data, GLOF risks, and current hydrological conditions, which were not properly considered in the original evaluation.
