Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Tuesday announced a series of new initiatives aimed at strengthening skill development and technical education in Sikkim. The announcement was made during the World Youth Skills Day 2025 celebrations held at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok.

Speaking through his official Facebook page, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of aligning skill development programs with evolving technologies. He referred to this year’s global theme, “Empowering Youth through Artificial Intelligence and Digital Skills”, as a timely reminder to adapt to technological advancements.

Tamang said the state’s Skill Development Department has already set up key institutions, including Sikkim Model Career Counselling Centres, Niyukti Kendra, Apprenticeship Cell, Command Centre, and Placement Cell. These centres aim to open global career opportunities for Sikkim’s youth and project their talent on the international stage.

The Chief Minister also made two key announcements:

Mandatory ITI certification for technical posts in government departments

Reservation of 5–10% seats in Polytechnic Colleges for ITI graduates

He further encouraged young people in Sikkim to view entrepreneurship and skill development as viable and rewarding career choices. “Every expert starts as a beginner, and every skill learned today shapes a brighter tomorrow,” he stated.

Tamang concluded with a call for collective action, urging youth, institutions, and the government to work together to build a “Skilled, Resilient, and Empowered Sikkim.”
