Gangtok, April 17: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed profound disappointment on Friday over the defeat of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill for women’s reservation in legislatures by 2029.
The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which also sought to increase Lok Sabha seats, fell short in the Lok Sabha with 298 votes in favor and 230 against out of 528 votes cast. It needed 352 for the required two-thirds majority.
“I am deeply disheartened that this bill could not pass despite the hopes of millions of women,” Tamang posted on social media. He highlighted how Sikkim’s mothers, sisters, and daughters rallied in Gangtok in strong support of the “historic reform,” showcasing unity for equality and representation.
Tamang, whose Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is part of the NDA, accused the opposition of “ruthless politics” to deny credit to the government. “They will face the wrath of women across the country,” he warned.
“This is a setback to women’s dreams of decision-making roles, stalled by political games,” he added. “Yet, we remain committed their voices will drive a just, empowered India.”
