Gangtok, Dec 14: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang launched the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) on December 14, aiming to improve healthcare services for senior citizens in Sikkim. The event, held at Mintokgang, was attended by Health Minister GT Dhungel.

The NPHCE initiative seeks to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare to the elderly. As part of the program, 20-bedded geriatric wards will be set up at STNM Hospital, along with 10-bedded wards at district hospitals. The initiative also includes specialized outpatient departments (OPDs) for elderly care and the distribution of mobility aids, such as spectacles, hearing aids, and wheelchairs.

Further components of the program include training healthcare professionals in geriatric care, conducting health camps, and offering home-based care and teleconsultation services. The program also focuses on raising community awareness and providing caregiver training to promote healthy ageing.

Chief Minister Tamang emphasized that the NPHCE will provide a comprehensive approach to improving the health and well-being of Sikkim’s elderly population, ensuring they live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
