Pakyong, Jan 5: The First Edition of the Inter-Department Cricket Tournament commenced on Sunday at the Sikkim Cricket Ground, Rangpo, with the opening match between the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and the Power Department.
Organised by the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) in collaboration with the Government of Sikkim, the tournament features 28 government departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) divided into two groups. A total of 42 league matches will be played over 17 days, with each team set to play a minimum of three matches during the league stage. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.
In the opening match, the Power Department, led by captain Bhanu Sharma, won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 103 runs in 20 overs. The Chief Minister’s Office, captained by Tenzing Chopel, fought hard but could only manage 91 runs in their 20 overs, giving the Power Department a 12-run victory. Palzor Bhutia of the Power Department was named Man of the Match for his performance.
The tournament champion will receive a cash prize of ₹10 lakh, while the runners-up will be awarded ₹5 lakh, sponsored by the State Bank of Sikkim (SBS).
