Gangtok, Feb 26: The Traffic Police in Gangtok have inducted two advanced drones to improve traffic management, surveillance, and public safety across the Himalayan capital, officials said on Thursday.

According to an official statement, the drones will provide real-time aerial monitoring of traffic movement, particularly in congestion-prone locations, busy junctions, and residential areas where vehicle flow is frequently disrupted. The aerial surveillance system is expected to help authorities identify bottlenecks quickly and respond more efficiently.

Officials said the drones will also assist in detecting obstacles that may hinder emergency services such as ambulances and fire tenders, enabling faster clearance of routes during critical situations.

During festivals, public events, and large gatherings, the drones are expected to support crowd management and coordination among traffic personnel, allowing quicker response and improved on-ground deployment.

The initiative has been sponsored by the State Bank of India Gangtok Branch as part of a data-driven approach to strengthen proactive policing and urban mobility management in Sikkim. Officials said the technology is aimed at improving traffic regulation while enhancing overall commuter safety in the city.
