Three people lost their lives in a landslide that struck the Chatten area of North Sikkim on Sunday evening, causing damage to the surrounding habitat. Rescue operations are underway, as officials suspect more individuals may be missing. So far, three bodies have been recovered.
Meanwhile, 1,678 stranded tourists have been safely evacuated from Lachung. The first batch, comprising 18 tourist vehicles, reached Phidang in Lower Dzongu on Monday. The tourists had been stranded since May 29 following a sudden cloudburst and continuous heavy rainfall that caused severe disruption across North Sikkim.
Efforts are still in progress to rescue around 150 tourists stranded in Lachen, located in the Mangan district. Multiple landslides have been reported in the area, and the administration is assessing all possible options for their safe evacuation.
Key roads including Dikchu–Sanklang–Shipgyer, Chungthang–Lachen–Zeema, and Chungthang–Lachung remain blocked due to landslides and bridge collapses. Two important Bailey bridges at Minsithang and Zeema on the Lachen route were washed away, cutting off access to the region. Restoration of road connectivity is currently underway to support ongoing rescue efforts.
