Gangtok, Mar 30: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has submitted a memorandum to Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, advocating for the establishment of a separate Bar Council for the state.

Currently, lawyers in Sikkim operate under the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, which Subba said poses challenges including limited accessibility, inadequate representation, and unmet professional needs.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha leader argued that a dedicated Bar Council would enhance institutional efficiency, support the growth of the legal profession, streamline governance, improve service delivery, and ensure better access to justice for the state’s residents.

Subba urged the Law Ministry to amend the Advocates Act, 1961, and take prompt steps to set up the new council.
