A rare sighting of a Royal Bengal tiger cub was reported in the forested area of Chongay under the Shyari constituency in Gangtok district, approximately 8 kilometres from the state capital, on Tuesday afternoon. The cub was spotted by a school student who captured a photograph of the young tiger near the forest edge while returning home.

The student’s father immediately alerted the authorities, and area MLA and Advisor to the Forest Department, Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, along with forest officials, rushed to the location to assess the situation and initiate rescue measures. However, the cub had moved deeper into the forest by the time the team arrived.

The Forest Department has launched a search operation to trace the cub and ensure its safety, while maintaining heightened vigilance in the surrounding areas. This sighting is significant as it indicates possible breeding activity and the presence of a female tiger in the area.
