Agartala: May 27, 2026: Tata Trusts and ONGC Tripura Power Company Limited (OTPC) have intensified efforts to boost the fisheries sector in Tripura by promoting community-based hatchery systems aimed at improving fish seed production and supporting sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.

The initiative, being implemented by the Centre for Microfinance & Livelihood (CML) under Tata Trusts, seeks to strengthen scientific aquaculture practices and enhance access to quality fish seed for farmers living in remote parts of the state. As part of the programme, 14 Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) hatcheries have been set up across Dhalai, Khowai, Sepahijala and Gomati districts.

The first phase of hatchery operations began this year at South Dhumachara under the supervision of Magna Mohan Tripura, marking a major step towards decentralised fish seed production. Experts associated with the project said the initiative is expected to encourage community participation and generate new opportunities for rural entrepreneurship in aquaculture.

With continuous technical assistance from CML, the Longtharai Matsaya Samabay Samiti Ltd. adopted a joint venture approach with local FRP hatchery farmers for fish spawn and seed production. During the present cycle, nearly 1800 ml of quality Rohu spawn was produced and distributed among nursery entrepreneurs developed under the project for fingerling cultivation.

In another development, around 600 ml of Rohu spawn was stocked in a one-kani waterbody at Lalcharra under Manu Block for nursery rearing. The fingerlings are expected to be ready for supply within the next two months ahead of the upcoming fish farming season.

Officials said the initiative would help reduce dependence on outside suppliers, strengthen cooperative-led fisheries enterprises and create sustainable income opportunities for tribal and small-scale fish farmers in Tripura. Farmers have also expressed optimism that easier availability of quality fish seed and scientific support would enhance fish production and improve their livelihoods.
