The Thadou Inpi Manipur on Tuesday commemorated the 109th anniversary of Sajam Lhah—marking the declaration of the Thadou War (1917–1919)—paying tribute to the courage and unity of Thadou forefathers.

According to a statement issued by its president M. James Thadou, the historic declaration traces back to March 17, 1917, at Jampi Summit in present-day Tamenglong district. Thadou chiefs, led by Pu Khotinthang Sitlhou (Kilkhong), Chief of Jampi village, performed the traditional Sajam Lhah war oath ceremony, formally resolving to resist British colonial rule.

The ceremony involved ritual offerings, invocation of ancestral blessings, and a collective oath of unity, making the decision to wage war binding under customary law.

Following the declaration, the message of war reportedly spread swiftly across villages through a coded traditional system using half-burnt firewood and dried red chillies, symbolizing urgency and mobilization for battle.

The statement described the Thadou War (1917–1919) as a significant chapter marked by resistance, sacrifice, and unity, with heavy losses including destruction of villages and displacement of families.

It also expressed concern over alleged attempts to distort historical narratives, urging the community to preserve and uphold what it termed as the authentic history of the Thadou people. The organisation further called for renewed efforts to protect and promote Thadou identity, culture, and heritage.

The Thadou Inpi appealed to the community to use the occasion to reflect on their history and work towards a future grounded in dignity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.
