Agartala, September 18, 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken up a case of alleged wrongful arrest in Dhalai district and asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit an enquiry report by October 16.

The complaint was lodged by Babul Das of Bhowliabasti, Ambassa, against the Officer-in-Charge of Ambassa Police Station and an unidentified Sub-Inspector. THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, while passing the order, observed that the matter involves alleged violation of fundamental rights.

According to the petition, Das was arrested on the basis of a warrant issued by the Judicial Magistrate 1st Class, North Tripura, in connection with PRC (WP) 54 of 2024 at Dharmanagar Police Station. However, the warrant was issued in the name of one Barun Das. Police allegedly executed the arrest by recording the complainant’s name as “Babul Das alias Barun Das.”

The complainant claimed he has never visited Dharmanagar, has no case pending against him, and repeatedly told the concerned officials—OC Ambassa and SI Hannanir Rahaman—that he was not the person named in the warrant. Despite this, he was arrested, which he described as an infringement of his fundamental rights.

Taking cognizance of the allegations, the Commission has asked the DGP to conduct a thorough probe and submit the findings within the stipulated time.
