The three-day masterclass on film music composition, led by veteran filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma, concluded successfully at the Manipur State Film and Television Institute (MSFTI), Imphal, leaving participants inspired and eager for more such intensive engagements.

Jointly organised by MSFTI and the Television and Cine Foundation (TCF), Manipur, the programme focused on film music composition and the evolving role of music in cinema. From a large pool of applicants representing diverse professional and creative backgrounds, 21 participants were selected. The cohort included aspiring filmmakers, musicians, media students and cinema enthusiasts, reflecting a vibrant spectrum of talent and passion.

Over the three days, Aribam Syam Sharma, widely regarded as a pioneer of Manipuri cinema, shared profound insights into the aesthetics of film music, the creative synergy between directors and composers, and the technical nuances of scoring for films. The sessions combined theoretical perspectives with practical guidance, including valuable inputs on preparing and presenting entries for film music composition.

Participants described the masterclass as enriching and transformative, expressing a strong desire for more such workshops and advanced sessions in the future. Many noted that the interactive discussions and real-world experiences shared by the veteran filmmaker deepened their understanding of cinema and music as collaborative art forms.

Organisers highlighted that the masterclass not only nurtured emerging talent in Manipur’s film and music sectors but also strengthened both academic and practical engagement with cinema at the institute.

Given the enthusiastic response, the Television and Cine Foundation (TCF) is expected to conduct more such courses and masterclasses in the near future, focusing on film analysis, short film making, and other key aspects of cinematic art and practice, further contributing to the growth of Manipur’s film culture.
