Agartala, September 06, 2025: Tipra Motha has taken a firm stand against the extension of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) deadline, declaring that the party will “never support” the legislation. Addressing a press conference today, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma reiterated the party’s opposition while also thanking former supremo and MDC Pradyot Kishore Debbarman for his efforts in connection with the recent Supreme Court verdict on village council elections.

Debbarma expressed serious concern over the State Election Commission’s delay in announcing the village council poll schedule. “The term of the village committees expired in 2021, yet elections have not been conducted. This is a violation of the fundamental rights of the tribal people of Tripura and shows administrative neglect,” he said.

He pointed out that the last village council elections in Tripura were held on February 24, 2016, and the results were declared on February 27. As per norms, the elections should take place every five years. However, citing the Covid-19 pandemic, the polls were postponed in 2021. Despite the situation returning to normal, no steps were taken, forcing the matter to be raised before the Tripura High Court, which directed the polls to be completed within six months. With no progress made, the case was subsequently taken to the Supreme Court.

“Pradyot Kishore Debbarman had earlier filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, and we are grateful to him for taking this initiative. The Supreme Court has now sought an explanation on the delay, which gives us hope that the election dates will soon be declared,” Debbarma said.

On the question of a possible alliance with the BJP, he clarified, “No decision has been made regarding alliances. But Tipra Motha is fully prepared to contest the village council elections independently.”
