Agartala, February 18, 2025: Tipra Motha Party (TMP) founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Monday reaffirmed his party’s commitment to its core ideological principles, warning that it would not hesitate to relinquish power if demands concerning the identity, language, culture, and future of the Tiprasa community were not met.
Speaking on the party’s foundation day via a social media live stream, Debbarman underscored that his party’s entry into politics and governance was solely to serve the people. “The power we hold today is a blessing from our voters. If we cannot use it to help our people, remaining in power is meaningless,” he stated.
Taking a strong stance, Debbarman reminded the Centre of the Tiprasa Accord signed a year ago, expressing frustration over the delay in its implementation. “We have been patient, but we cannot wait indefinitely. Our demands are legitimate – security for our culture, land, and identity. We seek educational rights like those in Karbi Anglong and Meghalaya, land rights similar to Bodoland, and direct funding for district councils. Is it wrong to demand protection for our indigenous languages like Kokborok and Kaubru?” he questioned.
The visibly discontented leader urged his party workers to be mentally prepared for decisive action. “If our promises are not fulfilled, we will make the right decision at the right time,” he asserted.
Expressing concerns over regional instability, Debbarman also pointed to the evolving political landscape in neighboring Bangladesh. “With Bangladesh and Pakistan moving closer, what if militancy returns? When we demand our rights peacefully, we are ignored, but when violence erupts, it is taken seriously. Despite this, we still have faith in the Central government and hope for a resolution soon,” he said.
His remarks send a strong message to the Centre, reinforcing Tipra Motha’s unwavering stance on safeguarding the rights of the Tiprasa people.
