Agartala, July 05, 2025: Tensions have escalated in Tripura politics as Tipra Motha issued a stern warning to the ruling BJP-led coalition over what it calls a blatant disregard for the tripartite agreement signed last year for tribal welfare. At a press conference on Saturday, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma indicated that the party may soon withdraw support from the coalition government. A final decision will be taken following a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on July 20.

“The central and state governments are not honouring the tripartite agreement even after more than a year. Letters have been sent to the Chief Minister, but no action has followed. We cannot work for the people under these conditions,” said MLA Ranjit Debbarma. “There is no point in remaining part of a government that doesn’t respect commitments or consult its partners.”

Debbarma further alleged that Tipra Motha was sidelined during the recent cabinet expansion. “Two of our MLAs were promised cabinet berths. But only one was made a cabinet minister and the other, a minister of state. We were informed about the oath-taking just the night before. This is unacceptable,” he said.

He claimed that even East Tripura MP Kriti Singh Debbarma is prepared to withdraw support from the government, with the backing of former Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. “The final call will be made after our leadership meets the Home Minister. But we are not here for ministerial greed. We have a duty to our people,” Debbarma added.

However, confusion and mixed signals emerged as former Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma appeared to distance himself from Debbarma’s press conference remarks. Speaking at a Rath Yatra event on the same day, Pradyot said, “I don’t know what Ranjit said at the press conference. I haven’t spoken to him about it yet. I’ll sit down and discuss the matter with him.”

Still, Pradyot acknowledged growing frustration among the tribal community. “It’s true that Tiprasas are disappointed. Even after 18 months, the tripartite agreement has not been implemented. Bangladeshi infiltration in ADC areas is increasing, and our people are feeling insecure,” he said.

Pradyot confirmed that a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah has been scheduled later this month. “I will raise these concerns with him directly. Our people deserve answers,” he said, but notably avoided making any definitive statement on withdrawing support from the BJP government.
