Agartala, December 29, 2025: The Chairman of the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), Retired Colonel Kush Kumar Sharma, was detained late Sunday night following an altercation at a city hotel hosting the 2nd Tripura Prabashi Summit. Police said he was in an inebriated state and engaged in disruptive behaviour along with his son, allegedly obstructing police duties and creating a commotion within the premises. He was released early Monday morning on a personal bond after undergoing medical examination.

According to officials, trouble began when security personnel of Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury requested that Colonel Sharma’s driver move a vehicle blocking the minister’s exit route. The chairman allegedly reacted aggressively, and the situation escalated further when his son, reportedly half-dressed, began hurling abuses at the minister and the people of Tripura.

Police sources stated that Sharma’s wife, daughter and daughter-in-law also threatened on-duty personnel, prompting senior officers including IGP (Intelligence) Krishnendu Chakaravorti, SP (West) Namit Pathak, and OC (West Agartala PS) Rana Chatterjee to rush to the hotel. The minister, who had stepped out after attending the summit, also attempted to intervene, but the TPSC chief allegedly questioned his identity and continued the confrontation.

As tensions rose, Sharma and his son allegedly engaged in a scuffle with the minister’s security staff, while two vehicles belonging to the family reportedly blocked the hotel exit, briefly preventing the minister’s convoy from moving out. Police later detained both the TPSC chairman and his son.

When media personnel asked for comments, Chairman replied “Nothing, nothing. I fell down, my finger has broken. No Comments.”

Colonel Sharma, who took charge as TPSC chairman in July 2023 after retiring from the Indian Army, has previously faced allegations of misconduct, including an incident involving a former High Court judge. Senior government officials indicated that relations between the state government and the TPSC have been strained since his appointment.
