Agartala, September 4, 2025: In a major crackdown on contraband smuggling, Damcherra police seized Burmese cigarettes worth approximately ₹50 lakh during a routine late-night checkpoint operation. Two individuals were detained along with the vehicle used to transport the illicit goods.
According to police officials, the seizure occurred during a standard naka point inspection in the Damcherra police station area. Officers stopped an Eeco van bearing registration number TR01-AA-0260 and discovered 50 cartons of Burmese cigarettes concealed inside. Each carton contained 500 packets, totaling 25,000 cigarette packs.
The detained individuals, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, are currently being interrogated to uncover further details about the smuggling network. The vehicle and the seized contraband have been taken into custody.
Police sources indicated that such routine inspections have become increasingly crucial in curbing the flow of illegal goods across the region, which borders Mizoram and Assam—areas known for cross-border trafficking routes.
Authorities have confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine the origin and intended destination of the seized cigarettes, as well as any possible links to larger smuggling operations.
