Agartala, January 24, 2026: Tripura has crossed a major threshold in renewable energy, generating over 7 megawatts (MW) of electricity through rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Officials hailed the achievement as a landmark in the state’s push toward energy self-reliance and sustainable growth.

According to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), the scheme has enabled thousands of households to slash electricity bills and earn additional income by supplying surplus power to the grid. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, the initiative aims to transform homes into micro power stations, easing financial burdens while promoting clean energy adoption.

Public response has been strong. Data shows 17,601 consumers have registered under the scheme, with solar panels already installed in 2,061 households. Of these, 1,746 families have received government subsidies, which can go up to ₹85,800 per household—making solar adoption accessible to middle- and lower-income groups.

Energy experts highlight that a 1-kilowatt solar plant can generate about 100 units of electricity monthly, enough to meet the needs of an average household. Excess power can be exported to the grid, ensuring long-term savings and steady income for consumers.

TSECL has played a pivotal role in the rollout, offering technical support, awareness drives, and streamlined installation processes. The corporation has set an ambitious target of expanding solar capacity to 50 MW within the next year, a move expected to significantly reshape Tripura’s energy landscape.

With rising electricity costs, officials are urging more consumers to register for the scheme through government portals or local TSECL offices. The message is clear: harness the sun, cut bills to zero, and contribute to a cleaner, self-reliant future.
