Tripura completed its third successful kidney transplant on June 30, 2025, at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital. The procedure involved a non-related donor and a recipient with high antibody levels and was carried out free of cost through collaboration with Shija Hospital, Manipur, under a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The recipient, previously dependent on dialysis with creatinine levels between 9 and 10 mg/dL, is now stable with levels ranging from 0.74 to 0.8 mg/dL and no longer requires dialysis. The state government continues to provide immunosuppressive medicines free of charge.
This transplant follows two successful operations performed in June and November 2024 by the hospital’s Nephrology and Urology departments, part of nine super-speciality services introduced since 2018. The hospital plans to conduct 8 to 10 more transplants in August 2025 and is partnering with the MOHAN Foundation to expand deceased donor transplant services, improving access for patients without living donors.
Dr Sankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, stated that the hospital serves patients from Tripura and neighbouring states. Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kanak Choudhary highlighted that three successful transplants within a year significantly benefit local patients, who previously had to travel outside the state for treatment.
Dr Manas Gope noted the recent transplant was complex due to the non-related donor and high antibody levels but was successfully completed with advanced technology. He emphasized that kidney transplantation remains the best long-term treatment for dialysis patients and affirmed that all procedures are conducted free under the Tripura government’s healthcare programme.
