Agartala, August 29, 2025: Tripura has secured a place among the top-performing states in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2024, released by the Union Ministry of Power, marking a significant achievement in energy efficiency initiatives.

The Index, developed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in collaboration with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), categorises states into four groups – Front Runners (>60%), Achievers (50–60%), Contenders (30–50%), and Aspirants (<30%) – based on their total final energy consumption.

According to the report, Tripura emerged as the best-performing state in Group 4 (<1 MToE). Maharashtra topped Group 1 (>15 MToE), Andhra Pradesh led Group 2 (5–15 MToE), and Assam secured first place in Group 3 (1–5 MToE).

The sixth edition of SEEI, covering FY 2023–24, introduced a sharper focus on implementation with 66 indicators across seven key sectors: Buildings, Industry, Transport, Agriculture, Municipal Services, DISCOMs, and Cross-Sector initiatives.

Compared to 2023, the number of Front Runner states dropped from seven to five, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Assam and Kerala were placed in the Achievers category, while Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh were ranked as Contenders.

Speaking at the launch, Akash Tripathi, IAS, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, said: “India’s energy transition is not just a response to climate imperatives – it is a strategic opportunity to foster innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth. The SEEI 2024 reflects measurable progress across states and sharpens the focus on ground-level implementation.”

The Index highlights notable progress across sectors, with 24 states notifying the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) 2017 and 20 integrating it into municipal by-laws in the Buildings sector. In Industry, 10 states have adopted MSME energy efficiency policies, while 7 states have made energy audits mandatory for non-PAT industries. The Transport sector has seen 31 states implementing Electric Mobility Policies, with 14 mandating EV charging infrastructure in buildings. In Agriculture, 13 states are promoting solar-powered pumps and integrated cold storage, with Kerala leading the way by achieving 74% adoption of energy-efficient or solar-powered agricultural pumps.

Importantly, all 36 States and UTs have now developed State Energy Efficiency Action Plans (SEEAPs), while 31 have formed State-Level Steering Committees on Energy Transition, chaired by Chief Secretaries.

The SEEI 2024 reaffirms its role as a key policy tool, offering actionable insights to enhance state-level energy efficiency and supporting India’s broader climate goals, including net-zero emissions by 2070 and a 45% reduction in emission intensity by 2030.
