Agartala, August 16, 2025: A shocking incident unfolded at GB Hospital today when a woman gave birth in the hospital bathroom, and soon after, her husband was caught trying to leave with the newborn inside a market bag. The baby was later found dead, sparking tension across the hospital premises.
Police reported that the woman is a resident of Kalkalia area in Mohanpur sub-division under West district had come to the hospital for a consultation. However, before meeting the doctor, she unexpectedly gave birth to a baby boy inside the bathroom. Moments later, she reportedly appeared before the doctor carrying only the placenta. When questioned about the baby, she allegedly remained silent.
At that time, private security guards noticed her husband identified as Nipu Das leaving the hospital carrying a market bag. On suspicion, they stopped him and were stunned to find the baby inside. “The man was immediately booked and the police were alerted. On arrival, the police recovered the baby, who was already dead,” said a hospital security staff member.
In his statement to the police, accused Nipu Das claimed that his wife had developed pain after taking medicine for a toothache the previous night. “When we came to the hospital this morning, doctors advised us to undergo some tests. But before that, my wife gave birth in the bathroom. She then told me to take the baby out in a bag,” Das told investigators.
The incident created panic and outrage among patients and attendants at the hospital. “It was a disturbing sight; everyone here was shocked,” said a witness present at the hospital.
Confirming the development, a police official said, “We have detained the husband for questioning, and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the tragic death of the newborn.”
The matter remains under investigation as police try to determine whether the baby was stillborn or died under suspicious circumstances.
